The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (the “USCIS”) recently released the new Eligibility Verification Form, Form I-9 (Rev. 03/08/13), as well as a revised Handbook for Employers (M-274).  The revised form is longer—two pages, rather than one—and includes additional instructions for completing the form.  It also includes new fields for e-mail address, phone number, and foreign passport numbers in Section 1 of the Form.Use of the new form is mandatory beginning May 8, 2013, based on current USCIS guidance (which may change based on indications from the agency).  We recommend that employers take time to review the new form, new instructions, and new Employer Handbook, as well as to train all company representatives responsible for the Form I-9 process, before starting to use the new form version on or before May 8.  Once implemented, the new Form I-9 must be used for all new hires, rehires, and reverifications.
